Sponsored by Nike at 15: My Story as a Young Footballer
Being sponsored by Nike at 15 was one of those moments that made football feel very real. I was still a young player learning the game, but one of the world’s biggest sports brands had seen enough in me to offer support.
It was exciting, but it also taught me an early lesson: sponsorship is recognition of where you are, not a guarantee of where you will finish. The hard work still has to happen every day.
How young athletes attract sponsors
People often think sponsorship comes from asking enough brands for free products. At a serious level, it usually starts with performance and potential. Brands want athletes whose ability, attitude and direction match what they represent.
As a young footballer, the best thing you can do is focus on becoming undeniable in your environment. Train properly, perform in matches, look after yourself and behave in a way that makes coaches and organisations comfortable attaching their name to yours.

What being sponsored actually means
A sponsorship can give a young athlete confidence and access to quality products, but it also brings responsibility. You are representing more than yourself. How you communicate, compete and respond when things go wrong all become part of the relationship.
At 15, I was learning that football and personal brand were already connected. Long before social media became as powerful as it is now, the way people experienced you still mattered.
The opportunity did not remove the pressure
Being associated with Nike did not make academy football easier. I still had to compete with other talented players, deal with selection decisions and work towards a first-team opportunity. A sponsor cannot earn your place in a squad.
That is important for young players to understand. Celebrate recognition, but do not let it change the work. Products, attention and social media can disappear quickly. Your habits and your ability are what give you another opportunity.
Advice for young footballers seeking sponsorship
Build the athlete before trying to build the deal. Perform consistently, keep good footage, communicate professionally and make sure your online presence reflects the person you want clubs and brands to see. Never pay someone simply because they promise a major sponsorship without clear evidence and terms.
Most importantly, choose partnerships that make sense for your career. The right sponsor should support the journey rather than distract you from it.
