Why I Chose Arsenal Over Chelsea at Eight Years Old

At eight years old, I had a decision most young footballers only dream about: where should I begin my academy journey? I had spent time around development centres at Chelsea, Arsenal and Watford. Each offered something different, but I chose Arsenal.

The route to that decision started with Old Actonians in west London. We were a strong side, and being part of that group put me in front of scouts. I was not one of the standout players when I joined. Training and playing alongside talented teammates pushed me to improve. That experience still shapes how I think about development: the right environment should challenge you, while giving you room to grow.

Three different paths

Watford was closer to home. I could imagine progressing there and standing out, but I also wondered whether the familiar setting would push me enough.

Chelsea had major ambition and an intensely competitive academy environment. My brother had been there and had been released, so I knew that an academy place was no guarantee of a long-term future. In the video, I explain how I saw the competition for places at the time. It was a serious opportunity, but I had to decide whether that setting suited me.

Arsenal offered the mix I was looking for. I admired the football played under Arsène Wenger, and I felt the club could teach me to play the game well. Just as importantly, I felt wanted there. That mattered to me as a child making a big decision.

The trial and what came next

I remember a busy trial with children spread across different pitches. I cannot tell you exactly how I performed in every moment, but I was selected for the squad and began moving through Arsenal's age groups as a striker.

Looking back, the lesson is bigger than the club badge. A young player and their family should think about the coaching, the level of challenge, the journey to training and whether the player will have a real opportunity to develop. For me, Arsenal was the right choice at eight years old. Another player might need a different environment.

The decision began a chapter of my football journey, but it was the work after signing that mattered most. Getting into an academy is one step. Growing within it is another.
