Leaving a Football Academy: What I Wish Players Knew

When football has shaped your childhood, leaving an academy can feel like losing more than a team. You lose a routine, a familiar environment and sometimes the identity other people have attached to you. I know how difficult that transition can be because I went from academy football into the uncertainty of finding my place in the senior game.

At Arsenal, I played against leading academies in England and abroad. That level became normal to me. I expected to keep progressing, yet football can change quickly. Injuries, selection decisions and a coach's opinion can all affect a player's path.

The difficult change after academy football

The hardest period for me came when academy football ended and I had to find a team in men's football. The style of play was different. The support network I had known was different. I also had to face the possibility that some people had been close to me because of the opportunity they thought my career represented.

That can be painful. It does not mean a player has failed. It means their next step needs thought, support and time. A football career rarely follows the smooth line imagined at 15 or 16.

Find a place to play and keep a routine

In the video, I urge players to think carefully about first-team minutes. Waiting indefinitely for the perfect club can leave you without matches or a clear route forward. A sensible level where you can play, improve and move again may be more useful than a bigger name with no immediate opportunity. The right choice will depend on the player and the offers available.

Keep training while you make that decision. Find a team or group that gives you structure and people to work alongside. Speak honestly with those you trust about the options in front of you. Parents and coaches can help by listening to the player and keeping the game enjoyable, even when the pressure rises.

Leaving an academy was part of my journey, not the end of my story. If you are going through it now, give yourself permission to acknowledge how hard it feels, then take the next practical step towards playing again.
