Why Talent Alone Is Not Enough in Football
As a young player, I was regularly told I had the talent to reach the top. I trained in elite environments and was competing with players who later built major careers. Looking back, I have asked myself a difficult question: if I had that ability, what else did I need to do?

The answer is not that talent has no value. It opens doors. But the demands change as you get older. At an academy, turning up to scheduled sessions can make you look far ahead of players who do not have the same access. Around the transition into full-time football, many talented players begin doing much more outside those sessions. Simply keeping pace with your old routine may no longer be enough.
Development continues away from team training
In the video, I talk about the work players put into their game beyond the club programme. They review performances, improve specific technical weaknesses and take recovery seriously. Some have specialists helping them with strength, analysis or psychology. The point is not that every young player must hire a team of experts. It is that they should understand where they need to improve and use the time and support available to them well.
The details also change as life changes. Family responsibilities affect how much time a player has. Rest and time away from football still matter. I now think more carefully about how to use the time I do have, instead of assuming that effort during a scheduled session covers everything.

What I would tell my younger self
I used to believe my training and a few extra sessions would be enough. I did not always see how choices away from the pitch could affect the work I was putting in. With the experience I have now, I would pay closer attention to the whole routine: preparation, practice, recovery and the decisions I make when no coach is watching.
Even then, no routine guarantees a professional career. Opportunity, selection and performance on the day still play their part. My message to a young player is to make the most of what they can control, so that when an opportunity comes, they are ready to take it.
