What Adversity Taught Me About Football
People see the clubs I played for and can assume the route was straightforward. In this video I talk about the harder parts of my life and career, and how those experiences affected the way I approach football now. The aim is to give context to the player and person behind the highlights.
Setbacks can teach you to adapt, but I do not think anyone needs hardship to become a good footballer. Support, stability and opportunity matter. What I can say is that when difficult things happened to me, I had to decide how to respond and who I could rely on. That has stayed with me when a coach did not pick me, a move failed or a season did not go as planned.
If you are going through a difficult stretch, your story is still moving. Find people who will tell you the truth and help you take the next step. Football is one part of your life, and a result or a club's decision does not define all of it.
