Why I’m Becoming a Specialist Striker Coach

After playing professionally in England, Germany and Canada, I am beginning a new chapter: becoming a specialist striker coach. This is not a move away from football. It is a way of turning the lessons, details and different perspectives from my career into practical help for attacking players.

Why specialise in striker coaching?

I can coach a group, but the part of the game I understand most deeply is the striker position. It is my bread and butter. The work is specific: movement before the ball arrives, finishing technique, decisions under pressure, body shape, timing and composure.

Specialising also lets me give knowledge efficiently. A striker does not always need a long lecture or a generic session. Sometimes the biggest improvement comes from one accurate observation that changes how a player sees a situation.

A different range of football experience

My foundation came from high-level academy football and a senior debut for West Ham United. My career then took me through different countries, leagues and coaching cultures, including Hannover 96 in Germany and Cavalry FC in Canada, where I became the club’s first-ever goalscorer.

That range matters. I have experienced different ideas about how football should be played and different demands placed on a forward. I can now combine those lessons with the questions I always asked as a player: what can I do better, what does the team need from me, and what is happening around the next action?

Good coaching is not about pretending to know everything

Even an elite striker can benefit from another pair of eyes, but the job is not to force every player into one method. With a top-level forward, the useful intervention might be a small reminder about a pattern they already execute well. With a developing player, it may be more technical and structured.

The standard of coaching should change with the player. The principle stays the same: observe honestly, identify the detail that matters most, and communicate it in a way the player can use.

YouTube will be the free learning hub: striker knowledge, live discussions, analysis and practical ideas that can help players improve. That free content also gives players and parents a clear way to understand how I see the game before deciding whether they want direct coaching.
